SEASONAL TIPS

A letter from a column in paper to DDr. Fox, "The Pet Doctor" reads:

"Q: ...While driving home the other day, I spotted a young woman on in-line skates. She had a dog with very short legs, and it was doing its best to keep up with her long strides. I noticed her again about a mile and a half up the road, still rolling along and expecting the dog to keep up.  This is not the first time I've seenthis. I have also seen people on bicycles dragging a dog along on a leash. Please remind people that this is extremely cruel and detrimental to the dog's health.

A: Thanks for your letter. I hope it will be a wake-up call to those people who think that dogs love to run long distances regardless of weather and road conditions, breed, size and age. THEY DON'T. The consequences of extreme exercise can be fatal or cause permanent injury. I wish that such people were less self-involved and more aware of the needs and limitations of their canine companions."

    Rescuing the abused & neglected...

Rose - "Before & After" Rose was found alone & neglected in the basement of an abandoned house. She was just a few months old when Last Chance Rescue found her and nourished her back to health. She is a beautiful, sweet & loving little girl and part of a wonderful family now!

    HOMER:

Homer was a wounded dog that we didnt think had much of a chance. One of our fosters took him in until he was adopted. He shared a cage & was best friends  with another dog, but Homer willingly stayed in cage when asked.

One of our volunteers first saw him tied to a car, a skeleton. He grabbed food from her hands. There was refuse and broken glass around the car.  She laid a blanket down and lengthened his rope because she couldnt take him that night. When she went back next day to get him he was gone! They had let him loose.  She was so upset. So, instead, she started to feed the dog next door - and all of a sudden, Homer saw her and came running to her, tail wagging. The dog attacked him and wouldnt let go, trying to tear his ear off.  Homer never fought back. The dogs' owner came out and helped pry them apart and she loaded Homer in her car, bleeding badly, not knowing where to take him. He didn't look adoptable. But Homer was a very happy dog, loved everyone and loved to play.

The volunteer called his adopter tonight and he is sleeping in their bed with another dog. He plays with their 1 and 3 yr old very gently and loves to play with any dog.  He is obedient and happy all the time and they love him.  While he is hand shy, he tries to please. He is truly loved.

    WITH MY EYES

My prayer tonight is for all who
lie down in chains and cages.

    Alone and afraid on
    a concrete floor.
    Soundless screams behind
    the clang of metal.
    Locked in rooms
    most will never see.

I feel their fear arise in my soul
    Ancient yet new...
    A primal flame burning against
    the walls of my heart.

I want to scream an endless note,
    Loud and true:

    Clubbed.
    Forgotten.
    Dismembered.
    Forgotten.
    Gassed.
    Forgotten.
    Beaten.
    Forgotten.
    Burned.
    Forgotten.
    Electrocuted.
    Forgotten.
    Abandoned.
    Forgotten.
    Poisoned.
    Forgotten.
    Skinned.
    Forgotten.
    Shot.
    Forgotten.
    Caged.
    Forgotten.
    Shackled.
    Forgotten.
    Murdered.
    Forgotten.

    And with my eyes,
    they will be seen.

    With my voice,
    they will be heard.

    With my hands,
    they will know comfort.

    With my action,
    they will be free.

    Dear God, fill their oppressors
    with mercy and empathy.
    Dear God, instill compassion
    where there is apathy.
    Replace horror with grace.
    Bloodshed with healing.

    Restore all humans and animals
    to their natural place.
    Liberate all humans and animals
    from greed, violence and hate.

    So that tonight and evermore,
ALL may lie down to sleep
    unchained
    uncaged
    free.

    AMEN

    "BULLY BREEDS"

    Isabella

Tips on adopting a so-called "bully breed" to be posted soon......

Letter from owner of adopted pitt bull from Last Chance Rescue:

    "Dear Last Chance Rescue,
Over 2 years ago, my husband & I adopted a 7 month old Pit bull/Great Dane mix from the Petsmart Miller Rd. location.
His foster parent called him Damion; my husband & I named him Gage.
I was hesitant at first do to the negative media attention the pitt bread had been getting, but for my husband; it was love at first sight; he said he felt something with Gage that he didn't feel with the other dogs that day; it's was as if when he looked into his eyes, he could see into his soul, and he was pleading with him for us to take him home. We were told the sad story of Gage's early puppy-hood; how his owner had gone to jail, leaving him alone in the basement of the house only to have someone stop over once in a while to throw some food down on the floor. We were also told that he had been adopted out once before; only to be brought back after the family was told by the vet that he was mostly Pit bull (even-though LCR had already explained that to them prior to the adoption)
Well there loss was our gain...thank God they brought him back! Gage learned all the basic commands very quickly and we realized early on that he was very smart & so eager to please. I wish more people would just give an animal a few moments of there time & we could find so many more diamond's in the rough. Since then we have spent quite a bit more time training our Gage boy; & his good manors and sweet loving disposition has made everyone we meet fall in love with him; he is welcome everywhere we go; I just wish I could say the same for his brother (Chubbs the cat hee..hee..) Over a year ago, I had developed a few health issues, I know that having our Gage has helped me to recover; I think he would do well as a therapy dog. He has brought so much happiness to our lives, and I sing Last Chance Rescues praises to everyone that asks where we got him (and that's everyone). Thank you so much for the wonderful work that you do.
    Sincerely,
    Stacey"
